Here are some of my favorite photographs about the biology and life of red king crabs, Paralithodes camtschaticus. All photos by the author.
Adult male king crab eating a starfish, one of their favorite foods.
Ventral view of adult male king crab showing the triangular abdomen, and fifth appendage used for mating.
Adult female king crab showing the wide abdomen.
Adult male king crab holding a female with his chelae in a pre-mating embrace
Before mating, female king crabs must molt, or shed their shells. The new shell appears as the crab backs out of the old shell
Within hours after mating, the female crab extrudes a new clutch of bright purple eggs.
