Spring Break Scuba Training
During Spring Break in March 2017, Dr. Stevens and three students traveled to Key Largo, Florida for advanced scuba training, where we met up with UMD Dive Safety Officer Les Burke and several other students from the University of Maryland. UMES students Andre Price and Rebecca Wenker finished Advanced Open Water training, and Andre, Rebecca, and Cara Schweitzer recieved Nitrox (EAN32) training. Our first day was spent practicing compass courses and other skills at Jules Undersea Lodge. The next day we made two dives using Nitrox to 95 and 85 feet on the Spiegel Grove, a 510 foot Navy ship lying in 140 feet of water off Key Largo. We had planned additional dives on Friday, but windy weather caused them to be cancelled, so we took a day trip to Key West instead. Below, DSO Les Burke gives instructions to the divers.
